Bush Sr. ran higher federal budget deficits than Reagan. It took Clinton 5 years of gradually lowering the deficits he inherited from Bush Sr., til he was paying off the Natl Debt at $300 Billion a year. The last Republican president to pay down or balance a federal budget was Dwight Eisenhower.

It was needed to bankrupt the Soviet Union. In fact military spending was greatly decreased after the collapse of the USSR. Plus Bush Senior lowered gas prices for saving Arab nations from Sadda. Clinton benefited from both success by the 2 republicans.

The problem Reagan faced in the 1980's with respect to national debt was the fact that he cut taxes but the Democratically controlled congress would not let him cut spending. This country was already in debt and when he left it was in the billions not the trillions. The social libs hate him because is the very opposite of socialism communism and fascism.
