Yes he's fundamentally wrong. Sense of humor can work just as well as an attractor to either sex, it's all up to the individual. This is a gross generalization, regardless of what the "point" is supposed to be.

So, is he fundamentally wrong? I don't think so. Is he attributing qualities to individuals who don't deserve them? Yes, since there are many men who aren't funny. At all. But don't misconstrue his argument to be a critique of a person's sense of humor since many people will laugh at a joke and our senses respond to stimuli. What he is getting at is the necessity that the male gender shares to provide the stimuli necessary to get the girls attention to make the interaction possible: Reproduction

I see, your one of those (and I am generalizing) who think that it is bad to generalize. Well, for this argument is serves to generalize. For example, in MOST cases it is the man who pursues a woman to begin a social interaction. MOST women are turned off by the sleaze bag. MOST women react positively to a guy who is funny and witty (including the bull dike that Hitchens refers to). MOST men will try to be funny to increase their chances of success. Women need not worry to be funny for success.
MagnesDrachen13 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
But he's fundamentally wrong. Saying that women naturally don't NEED to be funny is flawed, it's a trait whose significance is up to the individual. Making a broad generalization about nature and ALL women is false and over reaching, as much of Hitchens' writings tend to be.

This is funny. Oh, Magnes, Magnes. You are really commiting a disservice to all womankind. The subject is not "what" makes something funny, but the fact (and Hitchens presents evidence for this) that there is a distinction between the need that both genders have of developing a comedic skill and that this is tied to the social and mating rituals that have evolved over our specie's existence. Your reply should compel Hitchens to write his article on how some women apparently can't even read.

Women aren't funny. Period.

Women aren't funny, and I don't need Christopher Hitchens to tell me this.
top2d2 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
"women don't need to do that to men." --I'm a female, and instinctively I was offended at first, but he's got a point here. lol

i dont think he's overstepping his boundaries bc he's backing his story up with a type of evidence that any of us who've been to a bar can attest to. hitchens is spot on. nothing new there. and he's confident, not cocky

Christopher Hitchens once again destroys anyone with his absolute logic, which many can find overbearing at times, but nonetheless is often too true.
